Even though Tickner only played on one of the band’s records, 1975’s Journey, because he was going to Stanford University on a full scholarship to study medicine, he is credited with writing songs on that album and the two that came after it, 1976’s Look Into The Future and 1977’s Next. The band’s big break came when singer Steve Perry joined in 1977, and they released the record Infinity in 1978, which had the hits “Wheel in the Sky” and “Lights.”
Journey’s self-titled debut record came out two years after the band was formed. “Of a Lifetime,” which Tickner helped write, was on the album, and Schon said on Facebook that it was “still one of my favourite songs ever.”
Herbie Herbert, who managed Santana, assembled the group that would soon become Journey. It was made up of Schon, Tickner, keyboardist and singer Gregg Rolle, bassist Ross Valory, and, for a short time, drummer Prairie Prince. After a month with Journey, Prince returned to his old band, The Tubes, and was replaced by David Bowie drummer Aynsley Dunbar.
