Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Reviews
Since the last time, the Guardians of the Galaxy got their own film, a lot has transpired in their universe. They’ve fought Thanos, lost one of their own witnessed half of their number disappear for five years and in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, they ended up purchasing Knowhere’s headquarters.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is finally here and it carries the weight of not only the six years it took to get made but also of a certain feeling of finality in a fictional universe that has recently been critically lacking in endings. Long-time MCU viewers are aware that nothing ever truly ends in that universe.
Even the most irreverent moments in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, a movie that, like its predecessors has no shortage of irreverence are laced with the gravity of that aim, of Gunn’s attempt to wrap up his story with his original cast of performers.
As a result of this juxtaposition, the movie has a darker tone than its predecessors. However, there is another, possibly more significant, aspect that you’ll notice immediately away. This feels like a cast and crew eager to give it their all one more time in a franchise filled with passion and unbridled enthusiasm.
The fact that Vol. 3 is more than just a movie and is instead a blaze of grandeur is both its best and occasionally worst quality. Vol. 3 picks up after the Holiday Special that debuted last year and places the Guardians at a turning point.
While everyone is working hard to establish a new community on Knowhere, the team isn’t holding together as well as it once did, in part due to Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) inability to stop drinking himself to unconsciousness over the deἀth of Gamora (Zoe Saldana).
The Guardians are in a race against time to save their comrade forcing them to travel to uncharted territory, deal with the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), a dictatorial mad scientist and contemplate multiple possible outcomes.
The movie is largely structured as a series of quests to find specific items and knowledge that can help the squad solve its problems. The way the movie sets up its stakes in the first few minutes is frantic and adrenaline-pumping, so the Guardians fans are immediately captivated.
As a result, the crew isn’t the only ones looking for solutions. They can individually use it as a backdrop to delve into particular emotional depths.
Peter has to deal with the emotional damage he’s been trying to avoid for years, Drax (Dave Bautista) has to consider the possibility of losing his family again, Mantis (Pom Klementieff) has to consider her own independence, Nebula (Karen Gillan) has to learn to look past her own rage and so on.
His ensemble, lead this time by outstanding performances from Bautista and Klementieff gives the impression that they have only been friends for six years waiting for the moment the cameras start rolling. It’s all cozy, well-known and even happy which makes it simpler to manage the delicate balancing act of the film’s numerous, various elements.
