J. Cole Googles Self Drops New Song

There was a midweek treat for J. Cole listeners. Rapper Procrastination (Broke) was released on Wednesday night by producer Bvtman, who also sent out a text message explaining the song’s inspiration. The sender (probably Cole) admits that the music was never intended for public consumption, but that he is now releasing it as a way of saying “thank you” to Bvtman and “every producer out there cooking up and sharing their work with the world.

According to the note, Cole was having trouble getting motivated one day and decided to look up “J. Cole type beat” on YouTube. He was sent in the direction of Bvtman’s channel, which features a plethora of instrumentals paying tribute to various musicians such as Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Nipsey Hussle, Kanye West, 21 Savage, and Drake. The “Procrastination” beat helped pull Cole out of his funk and into the studio.

Bvtman recalled that he was traveling down the highway when he received an unexpected text message from Ibrahim “IB” Hamad, the co-founder of Dreamville Records and Cole’s long-time manager. An incredible moment for Bvtman occurred when IB revealed to the producer that Cole was an admirer of his work.

“If you know me, you know what this post means to me & what this song means to me,” he wrote in an IG caption. “If you know me you know this is my peace finally, my dream. … It’s crazy how this happened. Randomly driving on the high with my shorty and I get a text from [Ibrahim Hamad] saying [Cole] fuccs with my beats. I almost ain’t believe this was real life…. But it is.”

Bvtman’s “Procrastination (Broke)” can be heard on YouTube up above. With this song, fans may pass the time while waiting for Cole’s follow-up to 2021’s The Off Season. Back in 2019, the rapper started hinting that he will release a few more albums before calling it quits.

To put it bluntly, my long-term goal was to leave nothing on the table and become the best rapper I could be before hanging up my jersey. In a 2020 essay for the Players’ Tribune, Cole described the moment that “the seeds were sowed for The Fall Off.” I’m thankful that the dying flame has been reignited. There are just a few more things I want to do in my professional life before I can officially move on to the next phase of my life. It’s a Boy will presumably be Cole’s next studio album.
