McEntire was born in McAlester in 1955, but she spent her formative years on a ranch in Chockie. She was the third of Clark and Jacqueline McEntire’s four children. John Wesley McEntire, her grandpa, won the world championship in steer roping in 1934, and her father won it three times.
While growing up, Jacqueline McEntire wanted to be a country singer but ended up working as a public school teacher, librarian, and secretary. Her mother was delicate and caring, but her father had difficulty expressing his feelings. Writing in her memoirs, she recalled her sadness at not having been told of her father’s love while growing up.

Reba McEntire’s Career
After signing with PolyGram/Mercury Records in 1976, McEntire posed for this publicity shot. McEntire began her career as a country music recording artist when she signed with PolyGram/Mercury Records in November 1975.
In January of 1976, she made her first recordings for the label. She has a string part in her Countrypolitan arrangement, which Glenn Keener arranged. McEntire’s first single, “I Don’t Want to Be a One Night Stand,” was released in 1976.
Despite initial high hopes, the song peaked at number 88 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in May, well below the artist’s hoped-for success.
