Adult Swim Has Renewed ‘Birdgirl’ and ‘smiling Friends’ Season 2

Adult Swim has announced the renewal of two fan favorites for the second season. Birdgirl and Smiling Friends, both animated comedies, renewed for the following season.

Both shows are original to Adult Swim, which has grown to be one of Cartoon Network’s most successful programming blocks thanks to an array of adult animated series like Rick and Morty, Venture Bros., and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Both programs had their network debuts last year. Birdgirl is a spinoff of the much-loved Adult Swim sitcom Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, featuring Paget Brewster in the title role. Birdgirl follows Judy Ken Sebben (Brewster) as she takes over her late father’s company, Sebben & Sebben Worldwide.

The company was a legal office in the original series, but it looks to be more of a ridiculous tech company in this incarnation. Judy must juggle her life as Birdgirl, the nocturnal crime fighter, along with her CEO duties.

Brewster originated the part as a recurrent character in the 2001 series. Rob Delaney, Kether Donohue, John Doman, Negin Farsad, Tony Hale, and River L. Ramirez comprise Judy’s squad of coworkers and fellow crime fighters.

According to Adult Swim, the second season will include Judy and the team debating corporate ethics, cancellation culture, health fads, and several blunders they will fail to learn from.

According to this gang, sometimes it’s necessary to create new problems to solve existing ones. Since April 4, 2021, the first season consisted of six episodes that debuted weekly on Sunday nights.

Smiling Friends, which features an entirely new animation style, will also return at an undetermined date. The eight-episode series premiered last month and followed a small business dedicated to giving happiness to the world, with different degrees of success.

The pilot episode, which premiered on April Fool’s Day 2020, captivated viewers with its dark comedy and strange visual gags. Despite its two-year wait, Smiling Friends has unquestionably earned its position on the block with its swift second-season renewal.

Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, the show’s creators, voice most of the show’s primary and recurring characters, with assistance from Marc M., the imaginary company’s CEO.

While no release date for Smiling Friends has been revealed, fans of Birdgirl can anticipate seeing the winged superhero this summer.

Given Adult Swim’s history of premiering original programming on Sunday evenings, it’s likely that these shows will not air concurrently or in reasonably adjacent periods. Smiling Friends and Birdgirl are both available to view on HBO Max.
