Scott Kingsley Swift and Andrea Gardner Swift are the parents of Taylor Swift. Her father is a financial advisor and a former stockbroker for Merrill Lynch. He was raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, after being born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, on March 5, 1952.

Swift studied at the University of Delaware from which he received a business administration degree. Taylor’s mother is a former homemaker who previously worked as a mutual fund marketing executive. On February 20, 1988, in Harris County, Texas, Andrea, a former marketing manager of an advertising agency wed Scott, a stockbroker who had become a vice president of Merrill Lynch.

Where Did Taylor Swift’s Parents Rear Her?

Taylor was born into the family on December 13, 1989. On March 11, 1992, Austin, Taylor’s brother was born and she became a big sister over two years later. Taylor’s parents reared her on a Christmas tree farm. But after some time the family later moved to Nashville.

Taylor has always talked positively about her experiences growing up on the farm, even if the family eventually relocated to Nashville. In 2018, she even went back to visit the property. Later, in her 2021 song “Christmas Tree Farm” she paid tribute to her childhood home, singing about her joyful childhood holiday memories.

Taylor’s parents picked her name with consideration for their respective experiences in the finance sector. She told in 2009:

“My mom thought it was cool that if you got a business card that said ‘Taylor’ you wouldn’t know if it was a guy or a girl, she wanted me to be a business person in a business world.”

How Did Taylor Swift’s Parents Support Her?

Taylor Swift has always had support from her parents as she pursues her dreams. Convinced of her ability and determination from an early age, Taylor attempted to find a record contract to fulfill her aspirations. From the beginning, Andrea was encouraging and even took Taylor to Nashville. Taylor told in 2008:

“My mom waited in the car with my little brother while I knocked on doors up and down Music Row, I would say, ‘Hi, I’m Taylor. I’m 11. I wanted a record deal — call me.”

Following her record-breaking signing as the youngest person to sign with Sony/ATV Publishing in 2003, Taylor and her family moved to Hendersonville, a little town outside of Nashville.

Taylor, who was 14 at the time, moved to support her growing profession, but her parents tried to ease her transition by assuring her that it was only a change of scenery. Since their daughter’s birth, Scott and Andrea Swift have been her biggest supporters.

Scott enjoyed mocking his teenage daughter, just like any traditional father would, but Taylor handled it all with grace. She said in 2009:

“My dad is along the ride for this trip, He’s a social butterfly and loves being on tour. He loves it so much, he thinks it’s absolutely hilarious to embarrass me as much as possible.”

The then 19-year-old said:

“For example, [I’m] walking into the hotel lobby after returning from dinner. It’s a quiet, serene, beautiful when Screaming voice from out of nowhere: ‘HEY! THAT’S TAYLOR SWIFT!!’ Me: ‘Dad. Please stop doing that.’ “

Scott and Andrea attended several shows during Swift’s Eras Tour. Taylor sent a heartfelt shout-out to her parents at a Houston Eras Tour show in April 2023. She can be heard saying in a video posted on TikTok:

“I love you Houston, You treat us like Houston is my mom’s hometown, which it is. You treat us like this is where my parents got married, which it is.”

Then, in May 2023, Scott was seen hanging out with Matty Healy, Swift’s purported love interest, while on a performance stop in Philadelphia. The Grammy-winning performer honored Andrea on Mother’s Day by performing “The Best Day.”

Swift revealed to the Philadelphia crowd that, back in 2008, she had surprised her mother with the song. She was heard stating in a Twitter video, “I wrote this song just compiling these sort of core childhood memories I had of not just her as a mother, but her as a friend.”

What Happened to Andrea Swift?

Although Taylor often expresses her feelings to her audience through songwriting, she opened out in a real and honest Tumblr post in 2015 that Andrea had been suffering from a cancer diagnosis. Taylor said:

“I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you, Usually when things happen to me, I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now.”

She went on to say that doctors discovered Andrea’s cancer during a regular examination that she had encouraged her mother to get. Taylor continued, saying:

“I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know, She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.”
