On February 20, 1988, in Harris County, Texas, Andrea, a former marketing manager of an advertising agency, wed Scott, a stockbroker who had become a vice president of Merrill Lynch.

What Happened to Taylor Swift’s Mother?
Although Taylor mainly expresses her feelings to her audience through songwriting, she opened up in a real and honest Tumblr post in 2015 when she revealed that Andrea had been suffering from a cancer diagnosis. Taylor said:
“I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you, Usually when things happen to me, I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now.”
She continued by explaining that Andrea’s cancer was detected by medical professionals during a routine check-up that she had urged her mother to get. Taylor added:
“I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know, She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.”

Taylor mentioned in the same post that her father Scott had also received a cancer diagnosis in the past, but she gave no specifics regarding his medical history. She replied, “Both of my parents have had cancer,” adding details about her mother’s illness but omitting details about her father’s.
In 2020 Taylor revealed that Andrea was given a brain tumor diagnosis in addition to her cancer diagnosis while receiving treatment. Taylor told:
“Everyone loves their mom; everyone’s got an important mom, But for me, she’s really the guiding force. Almost every decision I make, I talk to her about it first. So obviously it was a really big deal to ever speak about her illness.”
She continued, describing the period as a really hard time for her family:
“The symptoms of what a person goes through when they have a brain tumor is nothing like what we’ve ever been through with her cancer before.”
