George R.R. Martin has spoken on the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and provided updates on the many projects he is working on. According to Martin’s most recent blog post, the WGA strike “is the most important of my lifetime.”
No one knows what will happen next, but I fear this strike will be protracted and contentious. He continued:
“I hope it doesn’t get as bad as the notorious strike of 1985.”
George R. R. Martin’s contract with HBO expired on June 1, but he hasn’t slowed down in his efforts to help young authors throughout the strike. Strikes like these aren’t about famous authors, but about newcomers who want to make it big.

To clarify, Martin stated that “all the scripts had been finished months before the WGA strike began” for Season 2 of House of the Dragon. To the best of my knowledge, no further writing has occurred since then.
“House of the Dragon is shot mostly in London (and a little bit in Wales, Spain, and various other locations), which is why filming has continued,” Martin explained.
British legislation prohibits the actors from organizing a sympathy strike even though they passionately support their American relatives (they have a major protest planned to show their support). They are completely open to being sued or dismissed for breach of contract if they decide to leave.
After meeting with producers, Martin said, “The Iron Throne scripts are coming along well,” and he added, “Maybe we will even be able to bring the show to the West End by…” I’d rather not say anything lest I jinx it.
Martin claims that he has been working “almost every day” on Winds of Winter. To write, rewrite, revise, and write some more. Making consistent headway. Progress, albeit slower than I’d like and surely slower than YOU’d like. It’s a good way to avoid difficulty.
