In season 4, Stranger Things went deeper into the Russian plot from season 3. This made people wonder how the Russians got so many creatures from the Upside Down and how many Demogorgons they had. Every plot from volume 1 of season 4 came to a head in volume 2, including Hopper, Joyce, and Murray’s mischief in Russia.
This lead to a lot of new information about Kamchatka, the Russian facility, the Upside Down, and the story as a whole. Stranger Things season 4’s first volume set up a lot of different stories, but the one about Hopper in Russia was the one that seemed the hardest to connect to what was going on in America and end on a good note.
In volume 1, Jonathan, Will, Mike, and Argyle were sent on a sort of fool’s errand, but they were still trying to find Eleven. With the Russian storyline, though, it was hard to see how it would fit in with what was going on in Hawkins and how it would relate to Vecna, the big bad guy.

How Did The Russians Get A Demogorgon?
As with the hint at the end of season 3 about the Russians having a Demogorgon, Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 made people wonder how the Russians got the Demogorgon, the five Demodogs, and some of the Mind Flayer’s shadow particles in the first place.
The answer is in season 3 of Stranger Things. Stranger Things season 2’s Demodogs and the Demogorgon were probably all caught when the Russians opened the gate under Starcourt Mall. In one scene from season 3 of Stranger Things, Erica and Dustin find a cage that makes it seem like Demogorgons could be put in it.
The fact that the Russians had one at the end of Season 3 and that they were able to take it to Kamchatka proves that they were able to catch a Demogorgon and some Demodogs and take them there.
Stranger Things season 3 also showed that the Russians tried to open many gates in their own country before moving their operation to Starcourt Mall and Hawkins. Even though these first gates didn’t stay open for long, they could be a second place where the Demodogs and Demogorgon were taken.
This would make more sense, since the creatures and the Upside Down gates would already be in Russia, which is the same country as the Kamchatka jail. It wouldn’t be necessary to move them from Hawkins to Russia, which would save time and trouble. In any case, the last two seasons of Stranger Things show that the Russians have been just as interested in the Upside Down and its many gates as the Americans have been. This helps explain how they got these animals.
