Carmen Sevilla, born Mara del Carmen Garca Galisteo on October 16, 1930, dἰed on June 27, 2023. She was a Spanish actress, singer, and dancer. She began acting in the 1940s and remained one of Spain’s biggest movie stars until the 1970s when she retired.

She started her career in television broadcasting in 1991, at the age of sixty, and worked for three major Spanish networks until she retired in 2010. Spanish-born Carmen Sevilla, who played Mary Magdalene in Nicholas Ray’s 1961 Biblical epic King of Kings, pἀssed away on Tuesday (27 June) at a hospital in Madrid from complications related to Alzheimer’s dἰsease and pneumonia. 

Her son notified the new Europa Press agency of his mother’s pἀssing. Sevilla, who was born in Seville, Spain, started out in the entertainment industry as a dancer in the 1940s before making the transition to film acting later that decade. In the 1950s, she rose to fame as a leading actress in Spanish cinema.

After acting in Juan Antonio Bardem’s 1958 La Venganza (Vengeance), which became the first Spanish film to be nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, she became a global star.

With her role as Mary Magdalene in King of Kings, opposite Jeffrey Hunter’s Jesus, Sevilla gained greater recognition in the United States. Eleven years later, she co-starred with Charlton Heston as Octavia in the badly reviewed epic film Antony and Cleopatra.
