Journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Glenn Greenwald revealed on Tuesday 9 May, that his husband, Brazilian politician David Miranda, pἀssed away at the age of 37 after spending most of the previous year battling a terrἰble sickness.

Greenwald tweeted to his two million Twitter followers:

Miranda and Greenwald, an American ex-pat who now resides in Brazil, first met on Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro in 2005. Five days after their initial meeting, they moved in together.

Greenwald said:

“His mother dἰed when he was 5, leaving him an orphan in Jacarezinho.”

“But a beautiful and compassionate neighbor, Dona Eliane, took him in despite 4 children of her own and deep poverty, became his mom, gave him a chance for a life.”

Greenwald told:

“That gave David the chance to live his full potential in a society that frequently suffocates it.”

There were “always many assumptions made by those who didn’t know David because of how David grew up,” Greenwald wrote.

No one had a stronger will or life force, according to those who did. He was a devoted and affectionate parent. He gave me fatherly advice. And his greatest legacy is our very extraordinary boys, each of whom had a challenging beginning to life Greenwald wrote.

David was exceptional, he said, “the strongest, most passionate, and most compassionate man I’ve ever known.”

Nobody was critical of him, according to Greenwald.

“The pain and loss are beyond description.”

And I am confident that many will honor him and his contribution. The journalist who won the Pulitzer Prize for his work on the Edward Snowden investigation is named Greenwald.
