Lance Blanks, a former CEO and professional basketball player who worked as a commentator for ESPN, pἀssed suddenly on May 3 in Dallas, Texas. Age-wise, Lance was 56.

Lance made basketball the center of his life. Prior to going to the University of Texas, he played collegiate basketball for the University of Virginia. There, he was a member of the high-scoring guard trio known as “BMW” from Texas, which also included Lance Blanks, Travis Mays, and Joey Wright.

Together, they helped the Longhorns, one of the nation’s most thrilling teams, to the 1990 Elite Eight. In 2007, Lance was admitted into the Texas Longhorns Hall of Fame. The legendary basketball player from the State of Texas was selected by the Detroit Pistons as the 26th overall choice in the 1990 NBA Draft.

He played three seasons in the NBA before spending the next seven years as a professional player in Europe. Lance worked as a scout for the San Antonio Spurs after his playing days, as assistant general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers, as general manager for the Phoenix Suns, and most recently as a scout for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lance spent time off the court investing in the development of others. He was regarded as a mentor to many young people, athletes, and businesspeople. He acted as a consultant in almost every area of life and forged innumerable new paths, always with a strong dedication to fostering environments and opportunities that would enable the next generations to thrive.

In order to further this cause, Lance worked with Basketball Without Borders for several years throughout Africa, South America, and Europe, supporting talented basketball players from underdeveloped regions. He also participated in the 2020 Summer Olympics’ Nigerian National Team.
