Bob Lee a co-founder of Cash App and former chief technology officer of Square was st@bbed to dea†h in San Francisco. The CEO of Lee’s current company, MobileCoin, Josh Goldbard, has confirmed his dea†h. In 2021, Lee became the CPO of MobileCoin, a startup in the cryptocurrency and digital payments industries.
Goldbard said in a statement to CNN on Wednesday 5 April morning, “Our beloved friend and colleague, Bob Lee passed suddenly yesterday at the age of 43, survived by a loving family and collection of close friends and partners.” Bob was a real force of nature; he was a dynamo.
“Our dear friend and colleague, Bob Lee passed away yesterday at the age of 43, survived by a loving family and collection of close friends and collaborators,” Goldbard said in a statement to CNN Wednesday morning. “Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature. Bob was the genuine article. He was made for the world that is being born right now, he was a child of dreams, and whatever he imagined, no matter how crazy, he made real.”
Goldbard continued: “We will miss you Bob. We love you.”
Bob’s father Rick Lee also released a post on Facebook, in which he verified the tragedy and said, “I just lost my best friend.” “He lost his life on the street in San Francisco early on Tuesday 4 April,” the father stated.
The father wrote, “Bob would give you the clothes off his back.” He had a strict no-judgment mindset and never judged anyone.
Rick Lee continued by saying that his son “would be missed by all those that knew him” and appreciated the outpouring of love and compassion.
London Breed, mayor of San Francisco, released a statement on Wednesday in which she described Lee’s passing as “a horrific tragedy.” Breed said the police are still looking into Lee’s dea†h and will provide further information once they have it.
A 43-year-old adult male victim was found by responding officers early morning in the Rincon neighborhood of San Francisco, according to an earlier statement from the San Francisco Police Department.
Police provided aid and called for medical assistance to arrive. The sufferer was taken by ambulance to the emergency room of a nearby hospital. According to the police report, “the victim died of his injuries despite the best efforts of first responders and medical personnel.”
Lee was reportedly the victim of a st@bbing, according to many local news outlets that quoted unnamed police sources. No arrests have been made and the investigation is still ongoing, according to the police.
Crime seems to have increased in San Francisco as the city struggles to recover from the pandemic. Preliminary police data shows that there have been 12 homicides in San Francisco so far this year, a 20% increase from the same period last year. In total, 56 people were k!lled in San Francisco in 2022, the same number as the year before.
“I don’t know how to fix what’s wrong, but I know something isn’t working in our grey city. Bob left this world too soon,” Goldbard wrote on Twitter.

Many People Expresses Tribute to Bob Lee on Social Media
Others in the IT industry and beyond also expressed their sorrow and grief at Lee’s passing.
“It’s so hard to believe he is gone,” Figma CEO Dylan Field wrote in a tweet, recalling how he first met Lee back in 2006.
Launchpad Capital investor Ryan Gilbert tweeted, “May his memory be a gift. Lee was one of a kind.” In a tweet honoring his “true friend,” MMA fighter Jake Shields said, “RIP brother” in reference to Lee.
Elon Musk the new owner of Twitter responded to Shields’ tweet by saying, “Violent crime in SF is awful and even if perpetrators are arrested, they are often released immediately.” In a tweet, Musk mentioned San Francisco’s top prosecutor, Brooke Jenkins.
Square’s (now Block’s) CEO Jack Dorsey reacted to the news early on Wednesday morning with a tweet on the decentralized social media app Nostr. Dorsey described it as “heartbreaking” in his tweet. “Bob’s contributions to Square and Cash App were crucial.”

For Square, Lee was the company’s first CTO. Lee was a key member of the Android launch team at Google before joining Square.
