Authorities say a car drove into a work zone on a busy highway outside Baltimore on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 killing six highway employees, including a father and son. 

According to a statement released by the Maryland State Police, The accident occurred around 12:40 p.m. on the inner loop of Interstate 695 popularly known as the Baltimore Beltway, in Woodlawn, Maryland within Baltimore County.

The driver was a 54-year-old woman from Randallstown named Lisa Adrienna Lea, according to the State Police. Ms. Lea’s vehicle collided with the VW of 20-year-old Windsor Mill resident Melachi Brown as she attempted to switch lanes to the left.

The State Police said:

“Crash team investigators believe this caused the Acura to lose control and subsequently travel into the work zone, It was not clear what led Ms. Lea to hit the Volkswagen”.

Her flipped Acura could be seen in the middle of a construction site between two barriers in a WBAL-TV video. The State Police said that Mr. Brown, who suffered no injuries had halted his inoperable vehicle north of the crash site.

The State Police have reported that the six workers, all of whom were temporary employees, were pronounced dead at the site. The accident took place in a construction zone on the left shoulder of I-695’s inner loop.

Who are the Maryland Victims that were k!lled?

According to reports issued by the Maryland State Police on March 23, 2023, aforementioned, the victims have been identified as Rolando Ruiz of Laurel, Maryland; Carlos Orlando Villatoro Escobar and Jose Armando Escobar both of Frederick, Maryland.

Mahlon Simmons III and Mahlon Simmons II both of Union Bridge, Maryland and Sybil Lee Dimaggio of Glen Burnie, Maryland. The Simmonses, the authorities stated, were a father and son. It was initially unclear whether or not Orlando Villatoro Escobar was connected to Jose Armando Escobar.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the crash on Thursday, so the State Police referred any inquiries about the workers there.

Ms. Lea was injured on March 23 and was being treated at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Authorities have stated that any potential charges are contingent upon the findings of the investigation, which is being carried out in conjunction with the Baltimore County state’s attorney’s office.

The Maryland State Police accident team is assisting federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board. Local and state officials have offered their sympathies to the families of the highway employees who were k!lled in the incident and stated they are keeping a close eye on the situation.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore tweeted, “My heart goes out to the victims and the families affected by the tragic crash” on the Interstate”.
