Authorities in California reported that former Dallas Cowboys tight end Gavin Escobar was one of two climbers who died in an apparent accident. As of this writing, Escobar was 31 years old.
On Wednesday 28 September, Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department tweeted that they had tried to reach two wounded rock climbers at Tahquitz Rock in the San Bernardino National Forest, which is near Idyllwild.
Later that day, the department said that rescuers had arrived but that “both victims perished at the scene.” Escobar and Chelsea Walsh were named as the victims by the Riverside County coroner’s office.
The Cowboys used the 47th pick of the 2013 NFL draft to select Escobar.
After four successful seasons with the Cowboys, he moved on to play for the Ravens in Baltimore for a single year. He played his final season in the NFL with the Cowboys, where he finished with 30 receptions and eight touchdowns.

The Cowboys took to Twitter to commemorate their tight end. After the 2018 season, Escobar retired from the NFL. This year, Escobar joined the Long Beach Fire Department as a firefighter (LBFD).
The Long Beach Fire Department wrote on Facebook, “It is with deep grief that we announce the off-duty death of Long Beach Firefighter Gavin Escobar.” According to the LBFD, he has a wife and two young kids back home.
