Beetlejuice 2: When Can We Expect From The Movie?

Beetlejuice 2

Beetlejuice 2

It appears that in the current era, every idea that has even a modicum of brand awareness will have a new legacy sequel or a full reboot. Nonetheless, some franchises try to produce a follow-up for decades without success. Fans of the film Beetlejuice have been clamoring for a sequel since the 1990s, and they may soon get their wish.

Though relatively straightforward, the original Beetlejuice flick alludes to a richer, more expansive realm of fantastic ideas. Yet, it grossed nearly $80 million on a budget of under $15 million, making a sequel appear probable. When developers first started working on it, its success appeared inevitable. After 30 years, the validity of this claim is in serious doubt.

To put it plainly, Warner Bros. is rumored to be hard at work on the Beetlejuice sequel as of February 2022. There has been no word about the photography project since the spring when most of it was expected to be completed.

Tim Burton was not attached to the helm, although Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder were set to reprise their roles. Back in October, he said he might be involved, but since then, there has been no word on that front either. Plan B, the production company founded by Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, is the only other name associated with a possible Beetlejuice sequel beyond the film’s major stars.

To sum up, they made the announcement for the project over a year ago, and then radio silence ensued. It’s likely that the cast and crew have been working diligently behind the scenes for nearly a year with nothing to show for it. It’s also possible that they’re only in the brainstorming stage of the project and haven’t figured out how to make it happen just yet.

There were many scripts submitted to the director, including the critically and commercially panned Hot to Trot, which went on to win several Razzies. Burton was more interested in the idea from screenwriter Michael McDowell because they had worked together on an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

The film’s production was a shambles. Due to the script’s unattractiveness, it was difficult to cast well-known performers. There were conflicts of opinion between McDowell and the other writers, which led to his dismissal and a subsequent rewrite of the script.

In essence, a separate film was scrapped in favor of Beetlejuice, although both versions proved successful. It’s to be expected that its successor would face challenges of its own.

There have been at least two prior attempts to make a Beetlejuice 2. Burton commissioned Jonathan Gems, the writer of Mars Attacks!, to pen Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian in 1990. The pitch reads like a satire on the trend of pointless follow-ups to popular films.

The idea for this Munster episode is about as good as average. Charles Deetz, played by Jeffery Jones, would have led the Deetz family to Hawaii, where he would have begun construction on a resort. Invoking a powerful Hawaiian native spirit during construction would have unleashed all sorts of havoc on the island.

The rights to this idea were held by the defunct Geffen Film Company, therefore it was never meant to be. In academia, the question of whether or not the project’s cancellation was a good decision may be hotly debated forever.
