The FBI announced on Sunday, March 5, 2023 that they are looking into the “suspicious death” of a female passenger aboard the Carnival Sunshine. According to the FBI office in Columbia, South Carolina, the woman was discovered unresponsive on the 27th while the ship was en route to Nassau, Bahamas.

The FBI Columbia field office said in a statement when they realized she wasn’t breathing or moving, medical personnel and crew members tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead on board, the FBI said.

Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson Matt Lupoli told CNN that the woman and her husband disembarked in Nassau, where Bahamian authorities have launched an investigation and are performing an autopsy. Together, we are making great progress.

Lupoli has stated that the matter is being handled by authorities in the Bahamas and Charleston and that the company will make no further statements. According to the FBI release, a team examined the passenger’s cabin for evidence on March 4 after the ship had returned to Charleston.

According to the FBI, there was no danger to other passengers either before or after the woman’s body was discovered. According to the announcement, the FBI looks into certain crimes on the high seas and suspicious deaths of US citizens.
