Charlotte FC reported the death of Anton Walkes, a defender and midfielder with the squad. Walkes died in a boating accident in Florida. He was young, only 25.
A statement released by the Major League Soccer club on Thursday expressed the club’s and league’s “devastation” at the news. After a two-boat collision on Wednesday afternoon near the Miami Marine Stadium, Walkes was found unconscious and given CPR by Miami Fire Rescue, said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Walkes who was in charge of one of the ships was injured and transferred to a local hospital where he eventually passed away. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

“He was a tremendous son, father, partner and teammate whose joyous approach to life touched everyone he met,” Charlotte FC owner David Tepper said.
It has been said of Anton that he “made those around him better people in all aspects of life and represented Charlotte FC to the highest degree both on and off the pitch.”
The Englishman kicked off his professional soccer career with Tottenham Hotspur when he was just 16 years old. He spent time on loan with Atlanta United before signing with League One team Portsmouth in 2017. In 2020, Walkes moved back to Atlanta and immediately started in 64 games with the Falcons.
Charlotte drafted Walkes with the second overall pick in the 2021 MLS Expansion Draft. The Charlotte FC team’s Anton Walkes was killed in a sad accident, and the league’s statement on his death read, “There are no words to explain the sorrow of everyone in Major League Soccer tonight.”
