American author, academic and editor/social critic Roxane Gay was born on October 15, 1974. Bad Feminist, a book of essays by Gay, was a New York Times bestseller and Gay has also written the novels An Untamed State (2014) and Difficult Women (2017) and the short story collections Ayiti (2011) and Hunger (2017).
For four years, Gay worked as an assistant professor at Eastern Illinois University before becoming an associate professor of English at Purdue. She left Purdue in 2018 to teach as a visiting professor at Yale.
Gay is a co-editor of PANK, a nonprofit literary arts collective, a contributing opinion writer at The New York Times, the founder of Tiny Hardcore Press, and the editor of Gay Mag, which was launched in collaboration with Medium.

Gay’s parents, Michael and Nicole, are both of Haitian heritage, and they raised him in Omaha, Nebraska. Her mom stayed at home to raise her and her dad runs a concrete business in Haiti under the name GDG Béton et Construction. Claudine Gay’s cousin is named Gay. Gay attended a Catholic school and often traveled to Haiti to spend time with her extended relatives during the summers. After elementary school, she moved to New Hampshire to attend Phillips Exeter Academy for high school. Gay started her college career at Yale, but she left in the middle of her junior year to move to Arizona to be with the man she was dating. She received her bachelor’s degree from Vermont College of Norwich University and her master’s degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, both with a focus on creative writing.
Gay graduated from Michigan Technological University in 2010 with a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Technical Communication. She joined the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. In 2010, after finishing her doctorate, Gay began working as an assistant professor of English at Eastern Illinois University. She established Tiny Hardcore Press and worked as a contributing editor for Bluestem magazine during her time at Eastern Illinois University. Gay stayed on staff at Eastern Illinois University through the end of the 2013–2014 school year. From August 2014 until August 2018, she taught as an associate professor in the Master of Fine Arts program in the Department of Creative Writing at Purdue University. Concerned about the equity of her salary, Gay announced her departure from Purdue in October 2018. Gay was a visiting professor at Yale University for the 2019 spring semester.
Gay has released three books: the short story collection Ayiti (2011), the novel An Untamed State (2014), and the essay collection Bad Feminist (2015). “Gay’s prose is plain and direct, but never cold and sterile,” said the reviewer for Time. She doesn’t shy away from confronting sensitive topics like power and identity, yet her writing is always approachable and informative.

Gays are bisexuals. She is now married to author and artist Debbie Millman after getting engaged in October 2019. Their secret elopement was disclosed by Gay in August 2020.
In January 2018, Gay came clean about having had a sleeve gastrectomy, a form of bariatric surgery in which 85 percent of the stomach is surgically removed. She towers over everyone at a lofty 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) in height.
