The first half a dozen episodes of this season lacked the kind of momentum that “The Dream is Not Me” provides, making even the most dedicated viewer curious about what will happen next. Sheridan does well to create intrigue about the ranch’s and some of the characters’ futures, but what’s really intriguing is how often he’s been looking to the past, first.
Don’t get me wrong, though this critic is well aware that there have been touching or humorous moments in the fifth season and he or she has mentioned them on numerous occasions as the high points of individual episodes. The stakes feel like they’ve been raised in “The Dream is Not Me” because there appears to be a lot more of it. It appears that for the first time, the audience cares about what happens next.
The stakes are presented in a handful of key subplots. Yellowstone is forced to rent land in the southern United States because the cattle may have contracted a disease from local bison and must be relocated far from the ranch. John will have to spend money he doesn’t have any part with important members of the extended ranch family to move the herd and make sure they’re healthy in their new environment.
Relationships on the ranch are complicated by the fact that Rip, Teeter (Jen Landon) and Ryan (Ian Bohen) will be gone for at least a year. Rip and Beth could be splitting up. The relationship between Teeter and Colby (Denim Richards) may face its first serious test. Unfortunately, this may also spell the end of Ryan and Abby’s budding romance this season (Lainey Wilson). Even though the stakes are higher now, viewers may still be wary due to the fact that, once again, much of this episode seems all too familiar.
The relationship between Summer (Piper Perabo) and John (Jared Harris) is one of the few that appears to be flourishing. Seeing Summer immunize calves and make genuine efforts to fit in with the lifestyle of the ‘other half’ was a wonderful experience. In all honesty, the romance is a little clumsy, but the chemistry between the two leads is well worth the effort thanks to their fundamental differences.
Two characters have been waiting for development for more than four seasons and they finally got it. Promoting Monica and Jamie’s characters is crucial. Unfortunately, Monica’s (Kelsey Asbille) portrayal as the voice of reason, which many viewers often ignore, has prevented her from ever receiving the recognition she deserves as a character. But Sheridan has done an amazing job developing the character’s relationships and earning the reader’s respect.

Years after Beth saved Monica from being wrongfully profiled and humiliated at a local shop, the sisters-in-law finally have an exchange that demonstrates even a modicum of love and a lot of respect for one another. In a rare moment of honesty, Monica confronts Beth about her actions, and Beth explains to Monica why she has never been malicious toward her. When Beth reveals that she’s lost her ability to have children, they share a profoundly bonding moment. These two qualities, heart and joy, were on full display in this scene. These two women have been through something very tragic together, but watching them connect was incredibly heartwarming and even joyful.
