Big Sky Season 3 Episode 10 “A Thin Layer of Rock”

The first half of Big Sky’s season comes to a satisfying conclusion with “Deadly Trails”. Big Sky Season 3 Episode 10 is exciting, intriguing and above all else, entertaining. And it may seem strange to call a crime drama entertaining, but that’s exactly what Big Sky can be when it’s really hitting its stride. It’s witty and ingenious and it keeps people interested.

This episode is setting up the second half of the season in which the Barnes family will likely be destroyed. Considering how well they began the season as a unit the family has been steadily disintegrating over the past few weeks. With the sole intention of rescuing Walter, Sunny is pursuing her own path. That in many respects has been her life’s work. Despite her absence, she has done her best to fill the role of mother that she felt was lacking in Walter’s life.

Ignore the fact that she probably banished him to the woods and fed him on occasion when she felt particularly generous. Sunny is trying to make amends and protect her son by saving him and whisking him away after the house fire, setting him up with the cabin and now attempting to clear his name.

Although she may not realize it just yet her efforts to rescue Walter have put her in direct conflict with Buck. They are currently lying to each other and trying to avoid confrontation but things between them will eventually explode probably in the worst possible way and at the worst possible time.

While Sunny still harbors hopes of reviving the family business, Buck appears to be more concerned with safeguarding Sunny, Cormac and the family name. Seemingly, she is willing to let everything burn to the ground if it means she can save Walter which would be almost redeemable if there weren’t so many casualties.

Sunny made a good move by asking Donno and Tonya for assistance with Paige even if it was in vain. Everyone is in some sort of trouble now, so working together is the best option. Once Tony acquires that wealth, however, Paige will be of no use to him and neither will Tonya nor Donno. In spite of the fact that they have no idea, Avery is in possession of the funds they are still under the impression that there is money to be found. Thus, tracking down Paige remains a top priority.

It looks like he’ll have to make a decision between Cassie and his parents and while at the moment I’d say he goes with Cassie, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ruins everything by changing his mind at the eleventh hour. Earlier in the hour, Poppernak and Jenny teamed up to probe the death of a groom on his wedding day. And dishonesty, dinosaurs and unsightly outerwear all played a part in the mystery.

These cases are wonderful and I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I’m still disappointed that Beau and Jenny didn’t end up together. Not a problem though, because there’s no such thing as too much Poppernak! The obvious bridesmaid was the one who struck up a conversation with Poppernak, so it seemed. Right?

Nope! Quickly, things started to go downhill and all of a sudden, Jenny was being shoved into the ground without repercussions and a T-Rex was relaxing in the middle of Montana with nothing but a man and a shovel to keep it safe.
