Beginning with bit parts on popular shows like Life Goes On, Northern Exposure, Mr. Show, Picket Fences, The Golden Palace and The X-Files, Black eventually became a household name. Black portrays an ex-astronaut being sought by Ron Silver in the unaired TV pilot Heat Vision and Jack, directed by Ben Stiller. His buddy, voiced by Owen Wilson, was a motorcycle, so they rode together.

Black’s cinematic career took off after Robbins cast him in Bob Roberts, with roles in films like Airborne (1993), Demolition Man, Waterworld, The Fan, The Cable Guy, Mars Attacks!, Dead Man Walking, The Jackal, Crossworlds, and Enemy of the State. Both of their sons were born in the years 2006 and 2008.
