Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen, both satellite engineers, had their son, Thomas Jacob Black, on August 28, 1969, in Santa Monica. Hermosa Beach, California is where his parents reared him. His mother was a writer and scientist who contributed to the guidance systems for nuclear missiles, the Apollo moon missions, and the Hubble Space Telescope’s science ground station.

Through his mother, he has three older half-siblings: scientist Neil Siegel, Howard Siegel and Rachel Siegel. His father became a Jew, whereas his mother was born into the faith. Black is a practicing Jew who went to Hebrew school and had a bar mitzvah as a child. He also has Scottish, Irish, German, Polish, Russian, and English ancestry.

Black’s first acting gig was a television commercial for the video game Pitfall! when he was just 13 years old in 1982. Black began his theatrical career in 1987 when he joined the Actors’ Gang, a group of UCLA undergraduates that included Tim Robbins. Beginning with bit parts on popular shows like Life Goes On, Northern Exposure, Mr. Show, Picket Fences, The Golden Palace and The X-Files, Black eventually became a household name. Black portrays an ex-astronaut being sought by Ron Silver in the unaired TV pilot Heat Vision and Jack, directed by Ben Stiller. His buddy, voiced by Owen Wilson, was a motorcycle, so they rode together.

Black’s cinematic career took off after Robbins cast him in Bob Roberts, with roles in films like Airborne (1993), Demolition Man, Waterworld, The Fan, The Cable Guy, Mars Attacks!, Dead Man Walking, The Jackal, Crossworlds, and Enemy of the State. Originally cast as a security guard, his scene was cut from True Romance.

Black had trouble with cocaine use at the age of 14. The man spoke thusly: “Cocaine was causing me a lot of trouble, and I needed help. It was a nasty crowd I was mingling with. One of them had threatened my life, so I was afraid to go to class. I was anxious to leave.”

Howard Black one of Black’s brothers passed away at the age of 36 from AIDS in 1991. Neil, the eldest of his siblings, is multitalented, working as an engineer, a scientist and a musician. Between the years of 1996 and 2005, Black dated actress Laura Kightlinger.

Black proposed to vocalist Tanya Haden, daughter of jazz guitarist Charlie Haden in January 2006. After 15 years apart, they reconnected at a friend’s birthday celebration, both having attended Crossroads School. In 2006, on March 14th, they tied the knot in Big Sur, California. Both of their sons were born in the years 2006 and 2008.
