Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen, both satellite engineers, had their son, Thomas Jacob Black, on August 28, 1969, in Santa Monica. Hermosa Beach, California is where his parents reared him. His mother was a writer and scientist who contributed to the guidance systems for nuclear missiles, the Apollo moon missions, and the Hubble Space Telescope’s science ground station.
Through his mother, he has three older half-siblings: scientist Neil Siegel, Howard Siegel and Rachel Siegel. His father became a Jew, whereas his mother was born into the faith. Black’s first acting gig was a television commercial for the video game Pitfall! when he was just 13 years old in 1982. Black began his theatrical career in 1987 when he joined the Actors’ Gang, a group of UCLA undergraduates that included Tim Robbins. Beginning with bit parts on popular shows like Life Goes On, Northern Exposure, Mr. Show, Picket Fences, The Golden Palace and The X-Files, Black eventually became a household name.
