Do you know who directs Wakanda Forever? You can’t deny the success of Marvel’s movies. While moviegoers get to watch greatness brought to life on the big screen, they may also learn more about the scope of a franchise via factors such as box office receipts, production costs and documentaries that go behind the scenes. It’s reasonable to say that no one else is as hard impacted as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s director, Ryan Coogler.

Coogler sat down with our own Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub for a future-focused discussion with Collider. Having directed and written 2018’s Black Panther, scrapping the script of the sequel after Chadwick Boseman’s unexpected death in 2020 and returning to the director’s chair for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the filmmaker has been up to his neck in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the past six years or so.

What also can’t be overlooked is the fact that behind the scenes, Marvel Studios puts a lot of pressure on its directors. Directors including Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) and Alan Taylor have left the business because of its reputation for adhering to stringent visual and narrative standards, which ultimately stifles a director’s creativity (The Many Saints of Newark). That was the pressure that Coogler had to shoulder early on in his career.

His first feature film, the critically acclaimed drama Fruitvale Station, was followed by the return of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) to the big screen in Creed and then it was on to Marvel.

Coogler is now attached to the direct action-adventure Wrong Answer and the TV series Scenes for Minors, based on his own experience as a minor, so he won’t be away from work for too long. Coogler also produces a number of future movies, such as the new Marvel Studios series Ironheart and a film on Golden State Warriors point player Stephen Curry.
