Just when you thought Tom Cruise’s success with the second Top Gun movie was his biggest movie triumph yet, he came up with the idea that is literally out of this world.
The 60-year-old Hollywood veteran has reportedly joined forces with The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman to pitch a movie that would be shot in space. The idea was first put forward in 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to plans.
Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) is said to have been contacted by Tom Cruise and Liman about a plan for the actor to take a rocket to the International Space Station.
“I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he’s taking the world to space,” UFEG Chairman Donna Langley said, per BBC News.
“That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom… Taking a rocket up to the Space Station and shooting.”
Langley said that most of the movie would be shot on earth, but that it would end with “the character going up to space to save the day.” She also said that she hopes Cruise will be “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”
If the movie gets made, Cruise would be the first famous actor to film on the International Space Station in space.
Even though it’s never been done before, it’s not surprising that Cruise wants to go to space. The Jerry Maguire actor is known for his daring stunts, so it’s not surprising that he wants to go to space.
Christopher McQuarrie, the director of Mission: Impossible, shared a rare photo of Tom Cruise doing a crazy stunt on his 60th birthday in July. In the picture, Cruise can be seen hanging from a red biplane in the air with little or no help.
In 2017, he made headlines when he was hurt on the set of Mission Impossible 6. A leaked video showed that he was hurt when he tried to jump onto a roof, which went horribly wrong.
Cruise was seen crashing into a building and hanging in midair in his harness before pulling himself up onto the roof and stumbling toward his crew. A few months later, he was back on set shooting stunts in London.
When asked at the Cannes Film Festival why he doesn’t use a stunt actor, Cruise is said to have said, “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance?'”
After the huge success of the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick, there is a lot of love for Cruise, who has been in Hollywood since the early 1980s.
Just a few weeks after it came out in May, it was the fifth highest-grossing movie in Australia. Since then, it has shot up to third place and made more than $1.4 billion at the global box office.
