Mark Hapka plays Depp in “Hot Take,” a MarVista Entertainment original series available on a streaming service. The new movie “Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial” will premiere exclusively on the free streaming site Tubi, focusing on the contentious defamation case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
Mark Hapka (“Parallels,” “Days of Our Lives”) and Megan Davis (“Alone in the Dark”) star as Depp and Heard, respectively. The debut will air on Fox’s Tubi on September 30. Along with Hapka and Davis, Melissa Marty (“Station 19”) will play Depp’s attorney, Camille Vasquez and Mary Carrig (“Law & Order True Crime”) will play Heard’s attorney Elaine Bredehoft.
The two-month defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard that ended on June 1 with a jury finding that Heard had defamed Depp by alluding to domestic violence allegations against him in a December 2018 op-ed piece is dramatized in “Hot Take,” which follows the tumultuous relationship between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in and out of court. Depp’s attorney’s disparaging statement against Heard was also found to be actionable by the jury.
The Fox show “Hot Take” was produced by MarVista Entertainment, a division of Fox. Guy Nicolucci (“The Daily Show”) penned the script, while Sara Lohman (“Secrets in the Woods”) helmed the feature film.
Tubi and MarVista rushed production “to capture a timely view on a topic that became part of the cultural zeitgeist, painting a distinct vision of what millions witnessed play out in the headlines over the summer,” said Adam Lewinson, Tubi’s chief content officer.
The EVP of creative affairs at MarVista, Hannah Pillemer, remarked that “Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial” is just one of many current, culturally important original movies to come from the growing partnership and slate of films being produced in collaboration with Tubi. “Anyone interested in pop culture or celebrity turmoil should check out these shows since they connect viewers to stories with this kind of social currency and topicality.”
Brittany Clemons, Angie Day, Marianne C. Wunch, Hannah Pillemer, and Fernando Szew serve as the film’s executive producers. With their company Ninth House, Autumn Federici and Kristifor Cvijetic are producers.
