The series creator, Shonda Rhimes, wrote the pilot and stayed on as a writer through 2015. A former colleague of Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff, takes over as showrunner. Grey’s Anatomy Plot
Starting with her entrance into the surgical residency program at Seattle Grace Hospital (played by Ellen Pompeo), the series chronicles the life of Meredith Grey, daughter of a distinguished general surgeon (Kate Burton) (later named Seattle Grace Mercy West and finally, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital).
During her internship, Grey works with doctors like Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and George O’Malley (T. R. Knight), many of whom are juggling personal life with the demands of their residency programs.
During their internship, they work under the supervision of senior resident Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and attending physicians Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), head of neurosurgery and Meredith’s love interest, and Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington), director of cardiothoracic surgery and Yang’s future husband. Chief of Surgery and attending general surgeon Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is a previous boyfriend of Ellis Grey. Burke, O’Malley, and Stevens all leave the show throughout its first six seasons.
Does Derek Cheat On Meredith?
Meredith and Derek’s (Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey) relationship on Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most tumultuous on television. Fans were on the edge of their seat week after week, year after year, because of the dynamic between the surgical intern and attending. How about it, though? They’ve been dating for a while; will they eventually get married? Will Derek finally make up his mind and declare his undying love for Meredith, restoring our broken MerDer 3?!
True, he chose her (after he decided on Addison, but that’s beside the point). He picked her, after all. Yes, he truly cared for her. Later, he had an affair with another woman. Okay, that doesn’t quite hold up. A doctor tried to kiss him but pushed him away and claimed to love his wife. But that doesn’t change the fact that the scene stabbed us all the same way.
In a word, we hate her. We have such a negative impression of her that we can hardly remember her. To refresh your recollection, the surgical resident in question who took it upon herself to hug Derek in a liplock was a doctor from Washington, DC – remember when Mer and Der tried the whole long-distance thing? But Derek, aka McDreamy, wouldn’t have it when Dr. Renee Collier attempted to come between them.
I used to think Washington, DC had it all, but I was incorrect. You. He said you, Meredith, are the only thing that matters to me. I indeed love you, and that love will never fade. Please don’t leave me, Meredith. Without you, I don’t want to continue living. And I intend to show it by every means possible. Which begs the question: how does she react? No, I don’t need you in my life. However, that’s not something I care to do. Never do I intend to do that again.
Okay, that’s the MerDer we know and love. Meredith has spent most of her life as a dark and twisting person who doesn’t believe in genuine love, while Derek wants to be her white knight and is full of romantic optimism. Together, they form something unique that neither could achieve on their own. Even if Mer’s significant other is no longer present on the program (R.I.P. Derek), we all know their love endures.
