The 1980s saw a slump in his acting career, but the 1990s saw a rebound after he appeared in Pulp Fiction. Travolta received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his roles in Pulp Fiction and Saturday Night Fever. He was nominated six times overall, with the most recent being in 2011. Early Life

Travolta was the youngest of six children and was born and reared in Englewood, New Jersey, a Bergen County suburb of New York City. Salvatore “Sam” Travolta, his father, was a semi-pro American football player who later became a tyre salesman and a partner in the tyre business Travolta Tire Exchange. He died on May 29, 1995.

His mother, Helen Cecilia (née Burke; January 18, 1912 – December 2, 1978), was an actress and singer who performed with the radio vocal group The Sunshine Sisters. She also acted and directed before taking up teaching high school drama and English. Sam Travolta’s siblings Joey, Ellen, Ann, and Margaret also pursued acting after being influenced by their mother’s passion for theatre and drama.

His mother was Irish American, and his father was a second-generation Sicilian American with roots in Godrano, Palermo. He said that the culture of his home was primarily Irish because he was raised in an Irish-American neighbourhood. He was reared as a Catholic, but at the age of 21 he later became a Scientologist. Travolta attended Dwight Morrow High School but left as a junior in 1971 when he was just 17 years old.

Personal Life

At the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Travolta was seen with his wife Kelly Preston. Actress Diana Hyland, whom Travolta met while making  the movie The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, was the love of his life (1976). They remained together up until Hyland’s death on March 27, 1977, from breast cancer. Travolta dated the French actress Catherine Deneuve in 1980. Marilu Henner, an actress, and Travolta had an on-again, off-again relationship that ended in 1985.

Travolta first met Kelly Preston, an actress, in 1988 while filming The Experts. They later got married in Paris in 1991. Jett, who died in 2009, Ella Bleu, who was born in 2000, and Benjamin were their three children (born 2010). Their marriage benefited from their regular attendance at marriage counselling, according to Travolta. They were locals of Ocala, Florida.

In appreciation of his performance in the movies Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction,Travolta received an Academy Award nomination for the best actor role. Six separate awards have been nominated for him, with the most recent being in 2011.
