Following the Netflix releases of Jupiter’s Legacy and Super Crooks, American Jesus appears to be the next major Millarworld adaptation.
Initially touted as part of the original 2018 lineup of series and films, production is now targeting a March 2022 start date, as we can exclusively reveal.
The comic book series, originally titled Chosen, was released in 2004 as part of Millarworld’s initial batch of publications.
It was eventually re-released as American Jesus, and three issues were published. Between 2019 and 2020, a follow-up comic book series titled American Jesus: The New Messiah was produced, consisting of three issues.
The comic is written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Peter Gross. American Jesus was one of the comics libraries bought by Netflix in 2017 as part of their acquisition of Millarworld.
The first Millarworld episodes and films were announced a year after the acquisition, including American Jesus.
Who is behind Netflix’s American Jesus?
Initially, Everardo Gout and Leopoldo Gout were touted as co-showrunners. The former will also act as the series’ director.
Similar to how Netflix acquired Steven S. DeKnight for Jupiter’s Legacy (who famously dramatically departed the project), who directed the hit series Daredevil, Netflix acquired Everardo Gout, one of the directors of Luke Cage. He directed the Marvel series’ season two, episode 12.
Everardo Gout is well known for his 2021 film The Forever Purge. He is currently directing an episode of Joe Picket for Paramount+ and working on projects like Snowpiercer, The Terror, Mars: National Geographic, and Banshee.
Leopoldo Gout is most recognized as an executive producer on Netflix’s docuseries Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich and on shows including Zoo and Instinct.
Stacy Perskie also contributes to the series, while Luis Rosales serves as casting director.
What’s American Jesus about?
The official comic description provides us a good idea of what to expect, and it appears as though it will closely follow the first issue:
“At the age of twelve, a youngster finds he is the resurrected Jesus Christ after surviving a strange accident.
He can transform water into wine, make the handicapped walk, and even revive the dead. How will he confront his destiny and lead the planet through a struggle that has been brewing for thousands of years?”
The Netflix page for American Jesus (which you must visit directly at the time of writing and is not searchable) states:
“A 12-year-old kid discovers he has been resurrected like Jesus Christ in an attempt to redeem humanity and must fulfill his destiny. Based on the comic book by Mark Millar.”
Additionally, we’ve read character profiles for the two major characters, Jodie and his mother, Sarah.
Jodie is “a typical adolescent until a strange accident changes his mind.” He is not abnormally shy but rather introverted. He is also an excellent storyteller, which he utilizes to amuse his pals.”
Sarah is referred to be a “beautiful and courageous woman.” She is Jodie’s mother, and she takes great care of him, although she has no idea what she is protecting him from.”

When will American Jesus begin production?
As previously indicated, manufacturing is scheduled to commence on March 1st, 2022. While we do not yet know the actual production locations, we know that most of the program will take place in Mexico.
The show’s production was originally scheduled to begin in 2020. The release date is unknown at this time. We’re guessing it’ll be on Netflix within the next two years.

While Millarworld has had a rocky start on Netflix’s movie and television fronts, the company has discreetly released several comics since 2018, including Sharkey the Bounty Hunter, Space Bandits, and King of Spies.
Among the next Netflix, projects are American Jesus, the live-action Super Crooks adaptation, and The Magic Order, which has been postponed previously.
Apart from Millarworld, Netflix is developing a slew of comic book adaptations from publishers such as Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Image Comics, and Boom! Studios.
