Simmons founded The Ringer in February 2016 as part of his newly formed Bill Simmons Media Group. The Ringer launched officially on June 1, 2016. Within a few years, the firm grew into a hugely successful podcast network with over 30 shows, including his own “The Bill Simmons Podcast” and “The Rewatchables.”
The Ringer was bought by Spotify in January 2020 for an undisclosed – but rumored – acquisition price of between $200 and $300 million. The Ringer had 90 workers at the time of the acquisition, most of whom created daily material for the company’s website.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Spotify invested $400 million in acquiring podcast network Gimlet Media in 2019. Gimlet earned $15 million in revenue in 2018. In 2019, The Ringer was estimated to have made $15 million in revenue.
