David Roland Cook, popularly known as David Cook, is an American rock singer and songwriter. In 2008, he rose to the limelight after he won American Idol Season 7.

His current backing band members include Jeffrey B. Scott who leads guitar, keyboards, backing vocals since 2016, Mike Ball for bass guitar since 2017 and Thomas Branch play drums/percussion since 2019.

Early Life

David Cook was born on December 20, 1982, in Houston, Texas, and grew up in Blue Springs, Missouri. He is the second child of Beth Foraker and Stanley Cook and has one elder brother and one younger: Adam Cook being older and Andrew younger respectively. 

Since he was young, he had found his passion for music and started to sing in second grade, when he was given a part in a Christmas performance in his elementary school by his music teacher, Mrs. Gentry. He then started performing in virtually every Christmas and PTA program.

When he was 13, he got his first guitar, a Fender Stratocaster and in middle school and high school, he was also a participant in choir and drama programs.

He gave musical performances at Blue Springs South High School along with The Music Man, West Side Story, and Singin’ in the Rain.

Furthermore, he became the Blue Springs South High School National Forensics League’s active member and there he got qualified for the national tournament twice for Duo Interpretation, which is an event that reckons upon performance and analysis of a literary work. In 2001, Cook completed his graduation. 

When Cook was in high school, he was also an avid baseball player (a pitcher) and in an American Legion Baseball game, he gave up a home run to Albert Pujols once. Following his injury, he shifted his major focus to music. 

Cook received a theater scholarship to the University of Central Missouri, however, he dropped theater following 2 semesters, in 2006, he graduated from the school with a degree in graphic design.

He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa when he was in college and following completion of his college graduation, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in order to focus on his music career, telling his mom, “I just want to give myself until I’m 26 years old to get a job.”

Cook had American Idol Season 2 alum and TV Guide Network correspondent “Kimberly Caldwell” for a dinner date whilst on the red carpet prior to the finale of season 7 of the show in May 2008.

On October 13, 2008, in a radio interview with XL 106.7, he confirmed that both of them were “still seeing each other.” In an interview with People magazine in November 2008, he stated that his relationship with Caldwell was a “nice break from the chaos” of popularity he gained post-Idol. In December 2008, the couple broke up.

On 31 March 2009, according to a report from People, he was dropping dates on his current tour because of “family matters”. Since 1998, his elder brother, Adam, had been treated with brain cancer and lost his life in 2009.

In Washington, D.C., Cook confirmed his brother’s demise at the “Race for Hope” on May 3, 2009, during his awards speech, and said that he “couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now.” Within 28 minutes, he managed to finish the 5k. An amount of $136,376.16 was raised by his team for the cause. 

In American Idol Season 8 Finale, he performed on his song titled “Permanent” as a tribute to his late brother and the audio of his performance became available on iTunes, and the received earnings from the sale of it were given for brain cancer research.

On June 20, 2015, Cook got married to Racheal Stump, his long-time girlfriend in a private ceremony in Nashville.


Before making it to Idol, Cook established a high school band in partnership with his friend Bobby Kerr, named it “Axium” and penned his first single at the age of 15.

Their song titled “Hold” was chosen to be played in movie theatres and this marked one of the biggest successes of the band. “Got Milk?” named the band among the top fifteen independent bands of the nation and in 2004, they were named as the best Kansas City band. 

Before he appeared on Idol, he had also recorded his second solo album that didn’t release and he was also doing work as a bartender in order to back himself financially.

The band rolled out 3 studio albums: Matter of Time, Blindsided, and The Story Thus Far, and 4 live albums along with “Alive in Tulsa,” prior to the release of his first solo independent album titled “Analog Heart”.

Following he was announced as the winner of American Idol season 7, he launched his debut single titled “The Time of My Life”, and the single peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and ranked 2 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and RIAA also certified platinum. 

On November 18, 2008, his major-label self-titled debut album came out, and RIAA also certified this album as platinum. Two top 20 singles were produced by the album titled “Light On” and “Come Back to Me”.

This Loud Morning became his second significant album that came out on June 28, 2011. Two singles were produced by the album titled “The Last Goodbye” and “Fade into Me”.

Following he left RCA, he released 3 stand-alone singles, making Cook an independent artist, and for his 4th studio album Digital Vein, he rolled out his first single titled “Criminals” that came out on September 18, 2015, with the latter two; “Laying Me Low” and “Wait For Me” is appeared on the album. The album produced two more singles; “Broken Windows” and “Heartbeat”.

He rolled out his first EP, Chromance, displaying a majorly pop-driven sound. Its main single titled “Gimme Heartbreak” came out to endorse the EP. The EP peaked at number 5 on the US Indie charts and on April 16, 2021, his second EP titled “The Looking Glass” was rolled out.

Awards and Recognition

Cook hasn’t received many awards throughout his music career.

In 2008, He received three nominations with two at Teen Choice Awards for Choice TV: Male Reality/Variety Star and Best Presenter (Post Show) and one at The New Music Awards for Top 40 Male Artist of the Year.

Among these three he won 2 awards: for Choice TV: Male Reality/Variety Star and another for Top 40 Male Artist of the Year.

In 2009, he received 4 nominations among which he won 2 awards: One at Nashville Music Awards for Song of the Year: “Time of My Life” and another for Top 40 Male Artist of the Year at The New Music Awards.

In 2013, he was nominated for Outstanding Guest Star at Dahsyatnya Awards but didn’t win.
