Early Life

Born on February 24, 1977, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in a family of boxers. Floyd Mayweather Sr. was his father who is an ex-welterweight competitor. He was born with his mother’s surname but soon after his last name was altered to Mayweather.

Before dropping out, Mayweather attended Ottawa Hills High School. Since his childhood, boxing has been a part of his life and hence he just never had a thought of pursuing a career in any other thing.

He stated “I think my grandmother saw my potential first,” adding “When I was young, I told her, ‘I think I should get a job.’ She said, ‘No, just keep boxing.'”

In a statement, he also said “When I was about eight or nine, I lived in New Jersey with my mother and we were seven deep in one bedroom and sometimes we didn’t have electricity. When people see what I have now, they have no idea of where I came from and how I didn’t have anything growing up.”

Returning from school and finding used heroin needles was quite usual for him as his mom was a drug addict. His childhood wasn’t easy for him at all. He said, “People don’t know the hell I’ve been through.”

In fact, the time that he spent with his dad was either taking him to the gym to train him for boxing. He said “I don’t remember him ever taking me anywhere or doing anything that a father would do with a son, going to the park or to the movies or to get ice cream,” adding “I always thought that he liked his daughter better than he liked me because she never got whippings and I got whippings all the time.”

Finally, the much-awaited face-off was held on May 2, 2015, in Las Vegas “Mayweather versus Pacquiao”. The fight was anticipated to be the highest revenue-generating bout in the history of boxing.

Mayweather and Manny had decided to divide all the gains in a ratio of 60-40. With this single fight, Mayweather made earnings of $250 million whereas Pacquiao made earnings of $150 million.

Mayweather faced Conor McGregor on August 26, 2017, and that was the highest-grossing Pay Per View (PPV) boxing fight in history. The fight had generated a minimum of 5 million PPV purchases.

And nearly 1 million people bought the PPV and the revenue of $50 million was generated. Hence, he made an aggregate earning of $35 million.
