Cheryl Tiegs was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota, on September 25, 1947, to Theodore and Phyllis Tiegs. Theodore worked on an assembly line before becoming a funeral director.
She is descended from Germans. Tiegs relocated to Alhambra, California, with her family in 1952. She attended Alhambra High School in that area.
Tiegs posed for a swimwear advertisement for Cole of California as a senior; the advertisement eventually featured in Seventeen magazine.
Tiegs continued her education at California State University, Los Angeles, where she majored in English but dropped out to pursue a modeling career.

Tiegs shot to new heights of stardom in 1978 after posing in a fishnet bikini. She featured on the cover of People four times and Time three times; for the latter, she was the star of the “All-American Model” cover story.

In 1990, she married Anthony Peck, Gregory Peck’s son; the couple had a son called Zachary and divorced in 1995. Tiegs married yoga and meditation instructor Rod Stryker three years later.
While married, the couple welcomed twin boys called Jaden and Theo via surrogacy. In 2001, Tiegs and Stryker divorced.
