In a docuseries called “Autopsy: John Candy,” Dr. Hunter studied John’s autopsy and discovered that John had struggled with obesity for most of his adult life. He also found evidence suggesting that John turned to binge eating as a response to professional setbacks.
Dr. Hunter also revealed that John had a harmful relationship with food and was a heavy smoker from a young age, reportedly smoking a pack of cigarettes a day when he was just 17 or 18 years old. The forensic pathologist then weighed in and said:
“I think it’s probable that John’s addiction to smoking was a factor in his death. But John appears to have a history of use of another drug that is also known to have a damaging impact on the heart — and that’s cocaine.”

Where Was John Candy Laid to Rest?
St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Los Angeles served as the venue for Candy’s funeral. Candy was laid to rest at the Culver City mausoleum of Holy Cross Cemetery.
His crypt is located just over Fred MacMurray’s, a fellow actor. Produced by his old improvisation company, the Second City, a special memorial ceremony for Candy was aired throughout Canada on March 18, 1994.

In it, he played an American sheriff leading a pretend “invasion” of Canada. John Candy also did voice work for a TV film called “The Magic 7” in the early 1990s. But it had problems with making the animation, so it never got finished.
Canada honored John Candy after he died. In 1998, he was put into Canada’s Walk of Fame. Then, in 2006, Canada Post made him one of the first entertainers on a postage stamp. On October 31, 2020, Toronto’s mayor declared “John Candy Day” for what would have been his 70th birthday.
