Maye, who was third on the depth chart going into his rookie season, had little action in 2021. During the season, he played in four games while wearing a redshirt—the most number of games permitted for athletes who choose to maintain their redshirt.

Maye got the longest action of his career up to that time against Wofford due to starter Sam Howell’s injury, which prevented him from playing. Maye split the game with Jacolby Criswell, the other backup, splitting the first seven of his nine throw attempts for 89 yards and a score.

Maye won many preseason accolades going into his second season as the starting quarterback for the Tar Heels, including the conference media’s Preseason ACC Player of the Year award. After the 2022 season, Maye was assigned to work with Chip Lindsey as the offensive coordinator, after Phil Longo departed for Wisconsin.

Maye had 3,608 throwing yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions at the end of the 2023 regular season. In addition, he rushed for 449 yards and nine touchdowns. Because of his play throughout the season, he was selected to the All-ACC second team.

After the season, Maye announced his intention to enter the 2024 NFL Draft and chose not to participate in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in 2023. At UNC, he concluded his career ranking sixth in passing yards (8,018 yards) and fourth in passing touchdowns (63,227 yards) and total offensive yards.
