Martinez went to Plaza Elementary School. She claims that Mr. Nadien, her teacher, taught her how to sing and she started composing poems in kindergarten.

Martinez claims that since she was “very emotional” and found it difficult to explain her thoughts, she was a homebody and had few friends growing up. When she felt overwhelmed, she would weep. She painted and explored photography.

She claims that people called her a “crybaby” because of how emotional she was as a child, which inspired the name of the character on her first album, Cry Baby. Martinez started learning how to play the guitar at the age of fourteen by researching internet chord diagrams for songs she liked.

She then composed her first song by incorporating her poems into one of the chord diagrams. Martinez completed his studies at Baldwin High School.
