What is Breanne Mckean’s Cause of Death?
When McKean passed away during Mapleton’s homecoming game after falling on the pitch. the school district shared a post related to her death and said:
“It is with a heavy heart that the Mapleton Local School District announces the passing of Bre McKean, a senior at Mapleton High School, on Friday, September 29, 2023 due to a medical emergency during homecoming festivities prior to the football game. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the McKean family, friends and the Mapleton community.”
The cause of death for Breanne McKean has been made public by the Ashland County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy revealed that Bre’s cause of death was Rhino-/Enterovirus-caused myocarditis which resulted in cardiac inflammation.
Myocarditis may be brought on by a variety of factors including viruses, gastrointestinal tract infections, bacteria, fungus, parasites and some medications including carbon monoxide and anti-seizure drugs.

How Did Breanne Mckean’s Loved Ones Remember Her?
Tim McKean, Bre’s father was the sports director at Mapleton High School. For McKean and his family, their daughter was “everything” and incredibly important to them. As the family received tributes from Mapleton and beyond, they quickly saw how much she meant to the community.
Yard signs were erected and T-shirts were manufactured. One youngster with his own sign company designed a large ‘Mapleton Strong’ sign for the school. In a show of support, rival sports teams from the school sported Mapleton’s colours while some friends even got tattoos.
The outpouring of support didn’t end there. Friends and acquaintances honoured Bre by changing their Facebook profile images and social media postings honouring her using the hashtags #MapletonStrong and #LiveLikeBre. The McKean family has expressed appreciation to the neighbourhood for the outpouring of help.
How Bre’s Spirit Lives on Through Education?
Bre’s celebration of life ceremony was held at Ashland University’s Niss Athletic Centre, and over 1,200 people came. The Ashland County Community Foundation organised the Bre McKean Memorial Scholarship, for which local companies and people started raising money.
Scholarships will be given to female student-athletes who graduate from Mapleton High starting in the spring of 2024.
For the first five years, Bre will get an award of $2,100, which is an homage to his sports jersey number of 21. The scholarship will be awarded at 4% of the fund’s total value after five years, guaranteeing that her legacy will go on for many more years.
