Kate (Katherine) A. Shaw is a professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, a Supreme Court contributor for ABC News and co-host of the podcast Strict Scrutiny. Shaw earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours from Brown University in 2001, specialising in gender studies and religion studies.
After that, in 2006, she became the top student in her class at Northwestern University School of Law, where she graduated with honours including Juris Doctor magna cum laude and Order of the Coif. She also served as the chief editor of the Northwestern University Law Review and was awarded the John Paul Stevens Award.
After she graduated from Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law in 2006, Shaw worked as a clerk for Judge Richard A. Posner at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit before joining Justice John Paul Stevens’ team at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Shaw was employed by the Obama Administration in the White House Counsel’s Office from 2009 until 2011. From 2011 to 2023, Shaw taught Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Supreme Court, legislation, antitrust and gender and reproductive rights courses at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

Kate Shaw grew up in Chicago. According to her LinkedIn, she returned to Illinois to attend Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law from 2003 to 2006 after residing in Providence, Rhode Island during her time at Brown University.
She was employed as Judge Richard Posner’s legal clerk in Chicago the next year, serving on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

The duo first met at Brown University back in the late 1990s when they were both freshmen there. In 2020, Shaw said that her spouse has not changed since his undergraduate days despite being famous. Hayes was described as remarkably intact and largely unchanged by her. She said:
