Dean Spanos Career Journey

In early 1994, Spanos became the president and CEO of the Chargers, appointed by his father. From 2004 to 2014, the Chargers, led by Spanos, won 113 games, getting five AFC West championships and four playoff victories.

In May 2015, he gave control of the team to his sons John and A.G. but stayed on as chairman to manage the building of a new stadium.

After the plan to use a hotel tax to build a stadium in downtown San Diego didn’t get enough support in November 2016 (only 43 percent approval), the Chargers thought about going back to Los Angeles.

In January 2017, Spanos decided to move the team to Los Angeles. San Diego didn’t like this because, over 15 years, there were many ideas for a stadium, but city officials and business leaders always said no.

The team initially set up a temporary base in Costa Mesa using a 10-year lease until they found a permanent spot in Los Angeles. From 2017 to 2019, they played their games at Dignity Health Sports Park (formerly StubHub Center), a soccer stadium.

In 2020, they finished building their new home, SoFi Stadium, which they share with the Los Angeles Rams. StadCo LA, LLC., a partnership between Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and the Los Angeles Chargers, owns and runs the venue.
