Whitlock’s first employment was as a part-time employee of Bloomington, Indiana’s The Herald-Times. His first full-time job was as a reporter for The Charlotte Observer. He spent about a year there before starting to work for The Ann Arbor News in 1992, where he covered the University of Michigan for two years.
Whitlock was employed at The Kansas City Star in 1994. Whitlock received a suspension in 1998 for provoking spectators during a Kansas City Chiefs game. Whitlock’s resignation from the Kansas City Star was announced on August 16, 2010, by that publication.
