Who is Kahhori Marvel? The MCU’s First Indigenous Hero

Who is Kahhori Marvel

Kahhori is a new character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) introduced in the animated series “What If…?” Season 2. She is a young Mohawk woman and a member of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in pre-colonial America.

Her story unfolds in an alternate reality where she and her fellow Mohawk people are infused with the power of the Tesseract, also known as the Space Infinity Stone, after she goes into a “forbidden lake” to escape Spanish conquistadors.

This event leads Kahhori to wake up in an alternate reality where she discovers her newfound abilities. Kahhori’s powers include superhuman strength, durability, longevity, telekinesis, portal creation, force-field generation, and elemental manipulation.

These powers are derived from the Space Stone realm, a unique sky world created by the Tesseract. She stands out for being particularly adept at using these abilities compared to others in the sky world.

Unlike the others who chose to live in peace away from Earth’s wars, Kahhori decides to return to Earth to help her people, inspiring others from the sky world to join her cause.

The character of Kahhori, voiced by Canadian Mohawk actress Devery Jacobs, is notable for being the first completely original MCU hero with no backstory or ties within the comics. Her inclusion in the MCU provides significant Indigenous representation, a move praised by Mohawk Nation historian Doug George.

The episode featuring Kahhori was created with close collaboration with members of the Mohawk Nation to ensure cultural authenticity, and it explores the profound question of what would happen if colonization did not occur in America.

As for her future in the MCU, while Kahhori is confirmed to appear in more episodes of “What If…?” Season 2, there is no confirmation yet on whether she will appear in live-action movies. The popularity of her character after the release of the animated series may influence her potential inclusion in future live-action projects.
