Willis was born in California’s Inglewood. Her father practiced criminal defense law and was a member of the Black Panthers. Willis’ family relocated to Washington, D.C. when she was enrolled in the first grade. After her parents’ divorce, her mother returned to California. Willis lived with her father most of the time.

Form Where Did Fani Willis’ Get Education?

Willis studied political science at Howard University, graduating cum laude in 1993. Then moved to Atlanta to attend Emory University School of Law, graduating in 1996 with a Juris Doctor. She worked for the district attorney’s office in Fulton County for sixteen years as a prosecutor.

Her prosecution of the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal was her most well-known case. In the 2014–2015 trial of twelve educators accused of falsifying student responses on state-administered standardized exams, Willis, an assistant district attorney at the time, led the prosecution.

In April 2015, eleven out of the twelve were found guilty of racketeering under Georgia’s RICO Act. She started her own private practice in 2018. She was unsuccessful in her bid to be appointed to the Fulton County Superior Court that year. Willis was appointed South Fulton, Georgia’s chief municipal judge in 2019.
