Reubens had been privately battling metastatic lung cancer for years prior to his death. The actor battled cancer for six years and sadly passed away on Sunday night, as stated on his Facebook account.

The post also shared that Reubens said sorry for not telling everyone about his situation. He said,
“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

Pee Wee Herman Legacy
Reubens invented Pee-wee while part of a comedy group in Los Angeles in 1978. He brought the character to the stage after not getting on Saturday Night Live in 1980, and HBO recorded his performance in 1981.
In 1980 and 1981, Reubens appeared in Cheech & Chong movies and made strange appearances on Late Night With David Letterman in 1982, always staying in character and keeping his real identity hidden.
He toured the U.S. as Pee-wee in 1984, including a show at Carnegie Hall, and then starred in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), directed by Tim Burton. This led to a sequel, Big Top Pee-wee (1988), directed by Randal Kleiser.
Reubens gained fame with his CBS Saturday morning show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, which ran for five seasons from 1986 to 1991. The colorful series won 22 Emmy Awards, including two that he shared in 1988 and 1991.
On the show, Pee-wee interacted with various characters and had adventures in a playful house filled with toys, gadgets, and talking furniture. Cyndi Lauper sang the opening theme song.
However, in July 1991, Reubens faced a setback in his career when he was arrested for indecent exposure in an ad*lt theater in Sarasota, Florida.
