Mark Cuban was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Norton Cuban, his father worked as an auto upholsterer. Shirley was his mother and according to Cuban, she had a different job or different career goal every other week.

Cuban is Jewish and was raised in a working-class Jewish family in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mount Lebanon. After his family immigrated from Russia via Ellis Island, his paternal grandfather changed the surname from “Chabenisky” to “Cuban”.

Cuban started his first company at the age of twelve. To pay for an expensive pair of sneakers, he sold garbage bags. A few years later, he sold coins and stamps to make money. Cuban ran newspapers from Cleveland to Pittsburgh when he was sixteen years old, taking advantage of a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette strike.

He enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Pittsburgh, where he joined the fraternity Pi Lambda Phi, rather than finishing his senior year of high school. Cuban attended the University of Pittsburgh for a year before transferring to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

There, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Management from the Kelley School of Business in 1981. Not even having visited the campus, he decided on Indiana’s Kelley School of Business because it had the least expensive tuition of all the business schools on the top 10 list.

Throughout his time in college, he operated a bar, taught disco and ran a chain letter. After graduation, Cuban went back to Pittsburgh to work for Mellon Bank, where he became deeply involved in the study of networking and machinery. He did very hard work to reach this stage.
