Cooper DeJean is an American football cornerback for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Recently, news spread online related to his health and there is a concern among his fans. So in this post, you get all the information related to what happened to him.

Star cornerback and punt returner “Cooper DeJean” suffered a lower leg injury. According to a press statement from the UI, the junior will miss the rest of the 2023 football season.

Coach Kirk Ferentz said:

“This is truly heartbreaking for Cooper, He has played extremely well and is a real playmaker on our team. We will all support Cooper during his recovery, which will continue into the new year. This has been a season filled with challenges for our team. I am proud of how our players have responded with tremendous grit and determination. We are focused on Saturday.”

Who Will Replace Cooper Dejean?

The head coach said Deshaun Lee will replace DeJean at cornerback. Lee started the first two games of the season in place of Jermari Harris, who was being investigated for gambling and is now the other starting cornerback.

For Which Teams Did Cooper Dejean Play?

DeJean went to OABCIG High School in Ida Grove, Iowa. In high school, he played quarterback and defensive back. He ran for 1,235 yards and 24 scores and passed for 3,447 yards as a senior. Jean won the Adidas All-American Bowl Player of the Year award in 2021.

DeJean made a number of important plays that helped OABCIG beat Van Meter in the state title game. In just two minutes, DeJean made two tackles returned a punt 14 yards completed two passes for 52 yards, ran three times for 22 yards, scored two scores and added a two-point conversion.

He also ran track, played basketball and baseball in high school. In basketball, he has scored 1,832 points, which is 55 more than NBA player Harrison Barnes and behind Iowa and NFL tight end T.J. Hockenson on the state’s all-time scoring list.

Even though DeJean was a four-star athlete and had a great track record, he didn’t get many offers after high school. He would rather play defense at Iowa than quarterback at South Dakota State. DesJean played in seven games as a true freshman at Iowa in 2021.

He mostly played on special teams and had four stops. In his second year, 2022, he became a starter. In 2022, DeJean played cornerback, cash and punt returner for the Hawkeyes. During the summer, he also played safety. DeJean showed how versatile he is by picking off a Graham Mertz pass and returning it 32 yards for a score against Wisconsin.

He also made 10 tackles, forced a fumble, downed a punt on the one-yard line and returned four punts for 82 yards which set up a short Iowa touchdown drive. DeJean was getting more yards than the Hawkeye attack through three quarters.

It was decided that DeJean would be the most valuable player in the 2022 Music City Bowl. He made seven tackles, returned an interception 14 yards for a score and returned three punts 42 yards.
