How Did Community Pay Tribute to Lou Cotroneo?

Lou Cotroneo’s death deeply affected his friends and family members. They shared tributes towards him on social media. Vintage MN Hockey tweeted, “R.I.P. to long-time Johnson Governors former Coach & before then Govs Goaltender – Lou Cotroneo.”

Michael Russo said, “I wish the best to the many friends/family members of Lou Cotroneo, the legendary hockey coach from St. Paul Johnson.”

Roxanne Wieken Larsen posted on Facebook, “Mourning the death of Lou Cotroneo yesterday at the age of 93.” 

Johnson Class posted on Facebook, “You weren’t a Govie if you didn’t know “Coach” Lou Cotroneo. Lou Cotroneo was a legend on the Eastside.”

A Look at Lou Cotroneo’s Professional Life

In the St. Paul hockey community, Cotroneo was a legendary figure, especially at Johnson High School, where he was the backup goalie for the 1947 Governors state championship team.

Cotroneo went on to coach the team for 20 years including 10 years as head coach, during which Johnson made seven trips to the state tournament. Prior to joining the St. Paul city staff, he was Humboldt High School’s assistant principal.

However, he was a constant presence in St. Paul hockey having worked as a stick boy for the minor league St. Paul Saints, an official in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and the VIP greeter for the Wild throughout the first ten years of the franchise’s existence. Cotroneo was dubbed “the Godfather of St. Paul hockey” by former US Senator Norm Coleman.
