Sorokin’s Move to Paris and Internship at Purple Magazine
Sorokin interned at a public relations firm in Berlin for a few weeks in 2012. She then moved to the City of Light to intern at the Purple fashion magazine in Paris. Sorokin adopted the pen name Anna Delvey during that period.
The Grandiose Scheme that Propelled Sorokin into the Spotlight
New York Fashion Week was an annual event that Sorokin attended in 2013. She elected to stay in New York over Paris and use deception to climb the ranks of the city’s high society. Sorokin accomplished this by creating the Anna Delvey organization, a private members’ club and art organization that bears her alias. As part of her idea, she suggested renting the six-story Church Missions House for use as an exhibition space and event venue.
To attend more prestigious occasions, Sorokin pretended to be a wealthy heiress, where she would show off her supposed wealth and look down on people she deemed unworthy. She cultivated a lot of high-profile connections and used Microsoft Word to create phony financial papers like bank statements and tax returns to prove she was wealthy.

Late in 2016, Sorokin requested for a $22 million loan from City National using forged documents; when her application was declined, she turned to Fortress. She persisted in giving bogus information to banks, including email addresses. Sorokin thereafter stayed at a number of high-end hotels, bought expensive clothing, electronics, and makeup, and hired a personal trainer.
Sorokin’s Immigration Status Comes into Question
The trial against Sorokin started in New York City in March 2019. The jury found Sorokin guilty on eight charges a little over a month later. She received a term of four to twelve years in state prison, a fine of $24,000, and restitution of $199,000. While in custody at Rikers Island for her upcoming trial, Sorokin received 13 separate citations for disruptive behavior.
After the verdict was handed down, she was initially housed in the women’s section of Bedford Hills Correctional Facility before being moved to Albion Correctional Facility. Sorokin was granted parole in February 2021 after serving just over two years of her sentence. However, ICE officials arrested her for visa overstaying six weeks later. Sorokin was allowed to post bail of $10,000 and was released from jail in late 2022 when he was placed under home arrest.
