Constance Leto gave birth to Shannon Leto in Bossier City, Louisiana. His mother is of Cajun descent. His stepfather’s last name is “Leto”. He and his younger brother, Jared, lived with their mother and his maternal grandparents, William Lee Metrejon and Ruby Russell after his parents split when they were young.

Shannon’s father remarried and took his own life when he was ten years old. Leto’s mother supported her son’s involvement in the arts by becoming a member of the hippie movement.

Leto developed an interest in percussion as soon as he and his brother began making music together at a young age and his role models included musicians working in a variety of various disciplines. He said:

“I came from a highly artistic family, there were canvases and paint everywhere, musicians and all sorts of stuff. It simply seemed reasonable. At a young age, I began to play with pots and pans, so I just naturally gravitated toward it. It was only a natural development.”
