The first Black law office was established in Martin County, Florida by Willie E. Gary. He is renowned for having prevailed in over 150 instances that led to multi-million dollar settlements including one case that yielded a $500 million verdict.

Gary brought legal action on their behalf in 1995 after Canadian businessman Raymond Loewen breached a contract with Mississippi funeral home operator Jeremiah Joseph O’Keefe. Although the case was later settled for $175 million, Gary’s victory ultimately caused Loewen to leave his firm.
The firm later underwent a bankruptcy filing and was purchased by a rival, Service Corporation International. Gary won the case, with a jury awarding O’Keefe $500 million in punitive damages. The Loewen funeral home case served as the inspiration for the Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones starrer The Burial from 2023.
Gary obtained a $240 million judgment against Disney in 2000 for allegedly copying the idea for the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. A $23 billion lawsuit that Gary won against R.J. Reynolds in 2019 was rejected on appeal. The case was inspired by the 1996 lung cancer death of Michael Johnson in Escambia County, Florida.
