Barry Sanders’ Journey from Wichita to Stardom

Sanders, the seventh of William and Shirley Sanders’ eleven children was born on July 16, 1968, in Wichita, Kansas. His mother worked as a housewife for the Sanders family while his father worked as a roofer and carpenter. Sanders’ father employed him and two of his brothers as roofer’s helpers.

When he was younger, Sanders had a reputation for being a voracious eater who could consume an entire loaf of bread in a single sitting. He frequently listened to local college sports matches that his father would broadcast on television.

In high school football at Wichita North, Sanders participated. Prior to this, he enjoyed playing basketball and football as a youngster. Sanders began playing tailback during his sophomore year of high school, but his brother Byron began playing that position earlier during Barry’s junior year of high school.

Sanders was supposed to start at tailback in his senior year after Byron graduated and left on a football scholarship for Northwestern University, but he was instead started at wingback, a position that is similar to wide receiver.

He participated in basketball as a guard in addition to football. Sanders also attempted to participate in baseball and table tennis. Until the fourth game of his senior year, when the original player was banned for conduct issues, Sanders was the starting running back.

In that game, he carried for 274 yards and four touchdowns. In his seven-game senior season, he ran for 1,417 yards on 139 attempts, averaging 10.2 yards per carry and scored 17 touchdowns.

Wichita North’s head coach, Dale Burkholder offered Sanders greater playing time in the season’s final game so that he could accumulate enough rushing yards to win the state rushing championship, but Sanders declined, claiming it was not important.

Sanders was selected an Honorable Mention All-American for his season and received all-state recognition. He while being a highly regarded athlete only received scholarship offers from Wichita State University, Iowa State University, University of Tulsa and Oklahoma State University-Stillwater because of his low stature.
