Michael Haley was born in Ohio. According to Nikki memoir, his biological father was an alcoholic who had legal issues. In Ohio, his family resided in a home without running water or electricity. When Michael was three years old, the government took him and his four siblings out of their house.

Why is Michael Haley Famous?

Michael Haley is the husband of Nikki Haley. He was the first gentleman of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017, and he is a commissioned officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard. Haley is a soldier in the South Carolina Army National Guard who focuses on security collaboration.

As a captain in the South Carolina Army National Guard, Haley was sent on a year-long tour of service in Afghanistan in January 2012. The unit worked in Helmand Province as an agribusiness development team assisting Afghan farmers in developing cash crops to replace opium poppies and enhancing farming practices.

Between the military and civil authority, Haley acted as a liaison. He may have been the first spouse of a governor to perform active duty in a combat area. Haley’s fellow Marines in the province of Helmand gave him the moniker FGOSC (First Gentleman of South Carolina).

There have only ever been fifteen gentlemen in the history of the United States, not counting the five men who are now serving in that capacity as of 2015, hence Haley is the first person to hold the position in South Carolina.

Haley served as the chairman of the foundation in charge of managing and maintaining the Governor’s Mansion in Columbia, South Carolina. Haley is described as the president of Stand for America, a think tank and news outlet that Nikki Haley founded after resigning as the US ambassador to the UN.

How Did Nikki and Michael Haley Meet?

In 1989, while Nikki was a freshman at Clemson University and Michael was enrolled at Anderson University nearby, they first met. Michael had a girlfriend when they first met but they started dating right away. Nikki shared a post on Facebook in which she described their first meeting.

Hurricane Fran forced them to postpone their wedding, which took place in 1996 at St. Andrew By-the-Sea United Methodist Church on Hilton Head. A Sikh ceremony was also held, but Nikki chose to follow Michael’s religion instead.
